About Project

Prof. Sabri KARADOĞAN

Old Diyarbakir is a very old settlement located on a wide basalt plateau in an area suitable for settlement near the Tigris River in the west of the Upper Tigris basin surrounded by mountainous areas.

Diyarbakır city has been occupied by many civilizations throughout history with its geographical location, topography, transportation network, fertile agricultural areas, climate and suitable position for defense. agriculture, industry, trade, transportation have _selftained its importance throughout the developed history.

Diyarbakır, which has a rich history and has hosted many civilizations, has numerous historical buildings that carry the traces of each period. However, these unique structures were violently destroyed and destroyed due to unconsciously applied zoning policies and misuse and intense and distorted urbanization after 1970. It was necessary to create an information system based on the scientific base of this historical heritage before it was too late.

In 2003-2004 Turkey has not yet met with the new geographic information technologies. In spite of this, a web based historical archaeological information system which was enriched with multimedia elements was transferred to the databases associated with digital maps and was designed and published with the support of Sur Municipality.

However, it should be accepted that such a work can be carried out with a multidisciplinary work team (Geography, GIS, Multimedia, Interactive Publishing, Database Management, Web Design, etc.) and financial support. Therefore, the project re_selfed unfinished.

Starting from 2014, the process of Amida workshops started with scientific studies in the Unesco process.
These workshops aimed to bring together scientists and scientists working on the old Diyarbakır city and the Hevsel Gardens-Dicle (Tigris) Valley or the Tigris Basin.
The idea of an atlas with Amida workshops came up.
In 2017 and 2018 sections of the Amida workshops that have been continuing since 2014 and turned into an international scientific work platform, presentations were presented and opinions were shared.
As a result, it has been concluded that the development of the History of the Suriçi Historical Information system, which had been started before, but was unfinished, was more rentable in terms of time and other costs.

Thus, current cartographic presentation techniques, multimedia facilities, GIS, interactive web map publishing, database technologies were reviewed and the system was re-developed and transferred to the web environment.

The system has been tried to be developed, updated and enriched in chronological order. Available contents of "Amida Web Atlas", which is currently under study, are as follows:
